Both my mages have 15 or so spells that I never invested a single point in. Once you learn what spells you want it's easier to build a good mage as they have so many choices. The 1x attack works but tougher enemies will break more often. Although it can suck some power potions if you use the better 3x lightning attack as it stuns longer and hits harder. I went with 2 mages this time through and with both casting lightning stun lock I could do titans and they would only hit me 4 or so times during the entire fight. Pretty good on it's own but add a melee attack that can't be avoided and BOOM. No dot just extra instant damage and a freeze. Use the freeze from ice attacks to make another unavoidable melee attack. Focus on fire if you wish but if you do then don't break the dot with an ice attack. It comes in a really cheap 1x then the 3x which is awesome and then the 5x which I didn't get till I had pretty much nothing left to kill at lvl 45ish.ĭon't mix attacks. The stun from lightning means that they cannot dodge a melee attack. It really will depend on your speed to set the order of attack as to how exactly you do these. You should combine mage spells with melee attacks. Instead of 5 people waiting on the lazy-ass mage. That way everyone gets the benefit of the constant rests. Maybe with Arcane soldiers or DS or other mana hungry people. So if im going to be resting between every fight id build a team around that. Cleric can heal them out of battle and spend trash fights using prayer to get himself back up, with no downtime. whereas a more melee team might need less rest. My biggest issue with them is time (my time) as they often need to rest between encounters if you use spells. I'm sure you could mix and match though.Īs Kordanor says though, those DoT's can be AMAZING. 300-400 health on the other hand? Very nice.

I tend to not even spec EN on casters since it only gives 2 a level, and an extra 200 mana might be like one spell on a mage. So mages should look to fit in that role, DESPITE their early game dominance. Personally I don't use mages in any of my parties and have no trouble in most of the game.īut then I often expect to use the back rank as supporters for a stronger front rank. In a sense they are somewhat similar to thieves, whose job is often to stack bleed. To properly gear, you need to take all your stats in to account and calculate the best upgrades, not just on pure stats you see alone, but how they would convert based on your overall gear situation. It's also worth noting that you can and should expect to turn mages into potion junkies. This is because Crit can be worth an equivelent amount of spell power - in our case 1% crit (22.1 Crit Rating) can be worth anywhere from around 5 to 10 Spell Power, depending on your stats. For example, if comparing 20 Spell Power vs 15 Spell Power and 20 Crit, the Crit item would win out, despite being lower on stat prio. The main priority is Spell Power, but it can be outweighed by other stats. However, it's still very manageable and all you really need to do is follow the stat priority list, as well as do a small bit of calculating for your gear options - it all comes down to maths. Gearing a Mage can be complicated, especially if trying out Arcane. Gearing Advice for Mages in Burning Crusade While reducing this is helpful, it is generally not as beneficial as other stats for Mages, and should not be a priority. In PvE, some monsters and all end game bosses have some resistance to all schools of magic. In PvP, this is used to increase spell damage against other players, especially in group PvP, where they will have access to buffs like Frost Resistance Aura or Mark of the Wild. This reduces enemies spell resistances, meaning they increased damage from spells. Spell Penetration is mainly a stat used for PvP.
